Manufacturing Process

Manufacturing Engineering and Production Process:

Manufacturing engineering,

Manufacturing engineering, originating from the Latin term "manufactus" meaning crafted by hand, encompasses the process of creating products from raw materials using various techniques, including hand tools, machinery, or computerized systems. This field involves the study and analysis of the procedures required to fabricate individual parts and integrate them into larger assemblies or machines.

Process engineering, when applied to engineering industries, provides insights into how challenges related to machine development can be overcome by understanding the underlying physical, chemical, and other scientific principles governing manufacturing processes. By delving into these principles, engineers can optimize manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.

Understanding manufacturing involves identifying the critical parameters that significantly influence production outcomes. By focusing on these parameters, such as material properties, process parameters, and quality control measures, manufacturers can enhance productivity and ensure consistency in product quality.

In essence, manufacturing engineering involves the application of scientific principles and engineering techniques to optimize the production of goods, ultimately leading to improved efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing processes.
Advance manufacturing engineering involves the following concepts—

  1. Process planning.
  2. Process sheets.
  3. Route sheets.
  4. Tooling.the
  5. Cutting tools, machine tools (traditional, numerical control (NC), and computerized numerical control (CNC).
  6. Jigs and Fixtures.
  7. Dies and Moulds.
  8. Manufacturing Information Generation.
  9. CNC part programs.
  10. Robot programmers.
  11. Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS), Group Technology (GT) and Computer integrated manufacturing (CIM).

PRODUCTION PROCESS:

production process

The manufacturing process comprises the methodical sequence of stages conducted within a production facility aimed at converting either partially processed goods or raw materials into completed products. This conversion involves the use of various tools, machinery, equipment, manufacturing arrangements, and methods tailored to the specific needs of the production line. The main goal of production is to proficiently and effectively transform raw materials into finalized goods that adhere to quality standards and fulfill customer requirements. Typically, production systems are broadly categorized into three fundamental types based on their unique approaches and operational characteristics. These classifications serve as frameworks to arrange and optimize the production process to achieve desired outcomes effectively that are given as under.

  1. Job production
  2. Batch production
  3. Mass production

1.Job production:

job production

Job production comprises of an operator or group of operators to work upon a single job and complete it before proceeding to the next similar or different job. The production requirement in the job production system is extremely low. It requires fixed type of layout for developing same products.

2.Batch production:

batch-pro

Manufacturing of products (less in number say 200 to 800) with variety of similar parts with very little variation in size and shape is called batch production. Whenever the production of batch is over, the same manufacturing facility is used for production of other batch product or items. The batch may be for once or of periodical type or of repeated kinds after some irregular interval. Such manufacturing concepts are leading to GT and FMS technology.

3.Mass Production:

mass production

Manufacturing of products in this case requires process or functional layout. Where as mass production involves production of large number of identical products (say more than 50000) that needs line layout type of plant layout which is highly rigid type and involves automation and huge amount of investment in special purpose machines to increase the production.
